Police Force Careers
The tenth amendment of the Constitution gives the police powers of states. There are more than 18,000 police agencies in America today. Police departments at state level may consist of the State Police and Highway Patrol. At the municipal / metropolitan area level, there may be housing, school and special port police, among others.

There are about 15,000 municipal police departments in America, but NYPD enjoys a special status among them. It boasts more than 40,000 regular officers in addition to approximately 13,000 specialized officers in various police departments as cruelty to animals, beach, harbor, hospitals, housing, port, railway, sanitation, schools, and transit and transportation departments. There may be so specialized units within specific departments airborne, bomb, forensic, drug and sex crimes units. There are many career opportunities in the police department with a number of vacancies being advertised regularly.

Criteria For Selection
Police conducted a written examination for employment, for which the candidate must be at least 17 ½ years of age at least 35 years and at maximum, to appear on the exam. Rent criteria is that the applicant for at least 21 years of age on the day of rental and must have successfully completed 60 college credits from an accredited college GPA of 2.0 or 2 years of regular military service in the United States Army with honorable discharge and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or before the date of hire and must be resident in one of the five boroughs of New York City, or any of the surrounding countries on the date of hire. He must have a driver's license and transfer of drug / alcohol screening test.

Compensation
Full salary and benefits are payable from the first day of training, and now costs around $ 25,000 per year. After completing six months of Police Academy training would increase to approximately $ 32,000 and continues to increase with annual cost. This is the basic salary. After 5 ½ years' basic salary rises to about $ 60,000 per year. In addition to basic salary, there are various other benefits such as overtime pay, holiday pay, night differential and uniform allowance.

For career advancement, every two to three years there are promotional tests in the New York police officers. Successfully operating in these tests, we can go up to the rank of lieutenant. Average incomes are now above the lieutenant $ 100,000 annually.

Retirement Benefits
Retirement benefits after 20 years of service to a police officer in New York consists of an annual pension of about $ 46,000, in addition to full medical benefits, a pension fund and plan of deferred compensation. If the pensioner is superior to a police officer, the pension is proportionately higher.

The Chicago Police Department, the rules of recruitment are more or less similar with some differences in the pay packet and other benefits. They offer a starting salary of more than 42,000 $ per year for their officers, which rose by more than 54,000 $ annually after one year of service, and more than $ 57,000 per year after 18 months.
