To start the process, you must first submit an application. You can submit an application on line by visiting online, or by emailing. If you would like to apply in person, you can visit any California Highway Patrol (CHP) office. You can also speak to a local recruiter by calling 888-422-4756. In order to apply, you must be a United States citizen between the ages of twenty and thirty-five years old, and have your High School diploma or GED.
After you apply, you will be required to take a written exam. This exam will consist of 125 multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions to test your reading, spelling, and comprehension skills. Once you pass this written exam, you will then be required to take a Physical Ability Test (PAT) to test your general physical health. This test will include a five hundred yard run; a hundred yard sprint; and it will test your upper and lower body strength. If you pass this test, you will then have your hearing and vision tested.
From here, you attend a Qualification Appraisal Panel Interview. Here you will be interviewed in front of a panel. The interview will be approximately forty minutes long. The purpose of this is to ensure that you have good communication skills. The results of the interview usually take about a month or so. During this time there will be a background investigation to check your criminal record and confirm your U.S. citizenship. Once this goes through, you will be interviewed by a psychologist.
Finally, you will receive a medical evaluation and take a polygraph test.
If you pass the exam, you will start your job training in the Academy.
