Summary
The Police Officer protects property and persons on VA property, and enforces appropriate criminal codes and regulations. Officers assists patients, visitors and employees who require direction and/or physical assistance. The incumbent frequently works and patrols alone and without supervision in the outlying grounds and parking lots areas. Primary duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities
independently performs foot, bike, vehicle patrol for prescribed areas;
provides emergency transportation to patients and Medical Emergency Teams in emergency situations; assesses psychiatric emergency situations;
informs individuals about their rights as suspects and/or witnesses;
responds to emergencies and disasters;
questions victims and witnesses at incident scenes;
provides victims with basic life support;
obtains statements;
identifies and reacts to life threatening situations such as natural disasters, hostage or felony assaults;
makes arrest and prepares detailed reports stating findings;
conducts short term and long-term investigations; and
coordinates with other emergency personnel in and out of the hospital grounds
Work Schedule:
12 hour shifts that vary weekly (6:00am to 6:00pm or 6:00pm to 6:00am)

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 15 days of the closing date of this announcement, 07/27/2018.
Time-In-Grade Requirement
: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:
Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
* Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: conducts foot and/or vehicle patrols; responds to emergency calls for police assistance; questions individuals at the scene of a crime and protects crime scenes; gathers evidence; prepares cases for prosecution; informs individuals about their rights as suspects; prepares written reports involving criminal and/or civil offenses; and possess knowledge of applicable laws of the Federal, state, county, or municipal government.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note
: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements:
Heavy lifting/carrying, 45 pounds and over; straight pulling/pushing/pulling hand over head .5 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking/standing 4 hours; crawling/kneeling/repeated bending/climbing, legs only .5 hours; climbing, use of legs and arms; both legs required; operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; ability to use and desirability of using firearms; near vision correctable at 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; both eyes required; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing without aid; emotional stability under stress. Duties are performed in a variety of settings and work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather while patrolling the buildings and grounds located on VA property.
Police Officer's must undergo and pass an annual physical and psychological evaluation for police officers in accordance with the VA Handbook 0730. This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a fire arm.
