Job Type: Full-Time Location: 1425 N. Courthouse Road, 7th Floor, Arlington *METRO-accessible*, Virginia       Arlington County is hiring a Probation Counselor to fill a permanent, entry-level vacancy to provide quality services, programs and interventions to juveniles, adults and families before the court within the Intake Unit of the Arlington County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Services Unit (JDR).  As a court-duty officer, this Probation Counselor will address public safety, victim impact, offender accountability, and competency development in conformance with court orders, the Code of Virginia and regulations of the Department of Juvenile Justice.  JDR is comprised of Intake, Juvenile Probation, Adult Probation, Argus House, Girls Outreach, and the Young Achievers Afterschool Program.
Following court hearings, the Probation Counselor will meet with clients to review court orders, complete required paperwork, and make necessary referrals for services. The employee will apply an understanding of the court system, causes of delinquent behavior, and awareness of various community resources, particularly those addressing substance abuse and mental health concerns. This position will provide services to an ethnically diverse population, of whom many may have limited English speaking skills.
Specific duties include: Attending court hearings on a daily basis, assisting the judges and citizens who come before the court by providing background and other information, testifying to probable cause, and monitoring compliance with court orders; Making appropriate referrals for court programs, treatment services, or other community resources in order to assist the parties coming before the court and making recommendations regarding the release of juveniles; Providing counseling to clients, family members of clients, and consulting with concerned agencies to address client needs; Gathering intake information regarding youth coming to court including those brought in on detention and shelter care orders; Preparing and maintaining reports, legal documents, correspondence, memos, case notations, and client records; and Entering summonses into the State electronic data system (BADGE), providing assistance to court-intake functions, and performing additional duties as needed.
 Selection Criteria: Minimum: 
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, or related field plus experience in a legal, court or probation environment.
Substitution
:  Substantial qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Desirable:  
Preference may be given to candidates who have oral Spanish/English proficiency and/or with experience in one or more of the following: Working in the juvenile and/or adult criminal justice system; Experience using the State of Virginia juvenile court intake and case management system (BADGE); Counseling troubled youth and/or families in crisis; Training and use of Motivational Interviewing techniques; and/or Conducting risk assessments on offenders, such as the Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument (YASI).
