Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Chief of Police, serves a critical role in the University of California Police Department as either a Professional Standards Lieutenant or Patrol Lieutenant. Manage, direct, and plan the daily operations and long-range goals of the unit they oversee, which can be at the Davis campus or Sacramento Campus.

Operations Lieutenant:

Provides oversight and supervision to a variety units and programs including but not limited to: patrol, bicycle unit, mutual aid coordinator, campus EOC liaison, protest incident team member, comp time program manager, scheduling, parking and transportation workgroup member and member of student-city commission. May act as a media liaison ensuring consistent communication and coordination of safety and security issues. Develop and direct special field operations, community orientated policing programs and directed patrol programs. Other duties as assigned.

Professional Standards Lieutenant:

Provides oversight and supervision to a variety of units and programs including but not limited to internal affairs, use of force and collision review, public information and outreach, training and development, investigations, counter-terrorism and intelligence, Dignitary protection team and Volunteers in Police Service. Physical Demands:

This position requires physical fitness so that all functions of a Police Officer will also be able to be performed by the Lieutenant. This includes the ability to stand for extended periods of time while in full uniform and carrying all safety equipment; the physical ability to maintain department standard proficiency at the range and in defensive tactics, both in training and in field operations.

Must have vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with normal color vision.

Weight in proportion to height. Work Environment:

-External candidates and internal candidates from other UC campuses must pass extensive background investigation, including criminal history and identity check and have no felony convictions pursuant to Government Code Section 1029.

-Participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Program.

-Must pass comprehensive medical and psychological pre-placement examinations as established by the University and by State law for Police Officers.

-Employee personally responsible for following safety guidelines/procedures.

-Availability to work on-call.

-Work alternative work schedules and may be assigned to work extended hours as needed, with little or no notice.

-Required to work on weekends as on-call administrator and respond to emergencies or major collisions during this time.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

-High school diploma or equivalent.

-Possess a valid California Driver's License.

-Current State of California Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Basic Certificate.

-Possess a Supervisory Certificate issued by California POST.

-Possess or obtain a Management Certificate within 12 months of appointment issued by California POST.

-Prior or current non-probationary Police Sergeant or higher classification.

-Working knowledge of current state of the art police and security management methods, philosophies, law enforcement practices and legal issues.

-Skills to utilize computer systems and software to prepare documents, reports and support the daily functions of a police department.

-Knowledge of current police methods and procedures, including apprehension and arrest, criminal investigations, collection and presentation of evidence, and police record keeping.

-Skill to delegate responsibility with commensurate authority to appropriate staff members and hold individuals accountable.

-Ability to effectively articulate verbally and in writing. Preferred Qualifications:

-2 or 4-year degree from an accredited college or university, and/or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

-Knowledge of University ordinances and regulations.
