The memorandum of interest must be delivered to Captain Ben Gregory no later than noon, on Friday, July 20, 2018. u00a0 u00a0 Phase II Oral Board: The applicants will participate in an oral board interview. The interview will be scored using a consistent process for this phase. u00a0 Phase III Final Selection: The candidate's performance, attendance, and work record will be reviewed and included in the final decision. The Chief may elect to interview any or all applicants. The Chief of Police will have final selection authority. Summary Detective Sergeant Under general direction, the Detective Sergeant is a first-line supervisor of the criminal investigative unit, assigns caseload, reviews reports, assists with investigations and may investigate cases on a limited basis. This first-line supervisory position provides direction and mentorship to designated staff. This position also performs other related duties as required to achieve position objectives. u00a0 u00a0 Functions, Duties and Responsibilities FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. u00a0 Sergeant (General) Carries out the mission of the agency as defined in the mission statement; models and promotes the core values of the organization. Represents the department in related committee activities as directed. Drafts performance appraisals for assigned staff. Complies with the safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices. In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, will respond as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities and infrastructure. Performs other related duties as required to achieve position objectives. Must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law. u00a0 Duties specific to the position of Detective Sergeant may include: Responsible for the supervision of the criminal investigation detectives. Assigns cases for investigation and reviews reports, search warrants, and operational plans Maintains a limited caseload and assists with investigations, including background investigations and other special assignments. Ability to work closely with Major Incident Team and other community partners. Provides direction and mentorship to those under his or her command. Ability to be on-call for detective investigations. Provides up to date knowledge of search and seizure and other applicable laws Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Law enforcement methods and procedures, including supervisory practices Pertinent federal, state and local codes, ordinances, rules and regulations Departmental service objectives and policies, procedures and operational functions necessary to accomplish them Maintain up to date knowledge of search and seizure laws Working knowledge of tactical and operational planning Departmental policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines and agreements as they relate to both emergency situations and daily Departmental operations Organizational policies, procedures and guidelines Safety practices related to the work English language, grammar, and punctuation Conflict resolution techniques u00a0 Skill in: Interpreting and applying applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, which apply to problem situations involving numerous aspects of law enforcement Interpreting and applying Departmental and organizational policies and procedures Initiating and completing projects and assignments with little supervision Carrying out investigations Analysis and evaluation of pertinent facts in order to reach correct conclusions when all facts have been analyzed Understanding and executing oral and written instructions Supervising, evaluating and training employees Preparing reports and maintaining accurate records Using computers and applicable software applications Using proper English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling Operation of firearms, patrol vehicles and other police equipment Making sound judgments Obtaining information through interviews and interrogations Communicating effectively in situations where cooperation is difficult to achieve Problem-solving complex issues and rational reasoning Organizational skills Supplemental Information Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required Must be a current Sergeant with the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Police Department and have a minimum of one year of field supervision experience in the Patrol Division.
