Responsibilities

Police Officer protects property and persons on Southern Arizona VA Health Care (SAVAHCS) property. Enforce appropriate federal, state, and local criminal codes and Veterans Administration regulations originating in federal statutes in the physical protection of patients, members, visitors, and employees. Police Officer protects the civil rights of all individuals while on federally owned property and is responsible for preservation of the peaceful environment requisite to the operation of medical treatment programs.

Assist patients, members, visitors, and employees who require direction and/or physical assistance.

Keep daily journal and records routine and unusual actions taken during a complete 24-hour period.

Control traffic and enforces parking rules.

Issue traffic warning citations and federal traffic violations notices when necessary.

Respond to crowd and riot control, bomb threats, and search requests.

Seek and detect signs of alcohol and drug abuse, trafficking in these items, and other activities involved in the introduction of contraband or vice practices.

Gather and preserve evidence. Questions witnesses and principals in crimes reported on VA property.

Perform preliminary investigations pertaining to a felony, drug abuse, misdemeanor or incident of injury, and prepares reports for same.

Arrest persons for offenses committed on VA property and transfers them to appropriate authorities for detention.

Observe all activity occurring on VA property and is constantly alert to acts of suspicious nature which may result in theft, burglary, pilferage, assault, or other serious crimes.

Respond to reports of crime or crime-in-progress, conducts a crime-scene assessment, and intervenes to abort the criminal act or to investigate and initiate actions.

Inspect all suspicious packages entering the facility. Patrols VA property and grounds, and notes any unsafe conditions and reports same.

Apprehend, restrain or arrest persons when necessary using a minimum amount of physical force and weapon employment.

Direct and assist persons to safety areas during fire, storm, or other emergencies, and takes prompt action to evacuate persons from dangerous areas.

Respond to emergency calls for assistance in controlling and restraining disruptive patients.

Test intrusion detector alarms, central monitors, and personal emergency signal systems.

Protect high value medical and medical research equipment, precious metals, agent cashier funds, canteen property and dangerous drugs.

Protect all information accessed and follows all applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc.

Applicant must be able to qualify with a firearm, Baton, and OC Spray. The applicant must be able to successfully complete a criminal background check.

Applicants will be required to attend and successfully complete the 10-week course at the VA law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/08/2018.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience that provided you with the knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. You must possess knowledge of applicable laws of the Federal, state, county, or municipal government, possess arrest authority and have the ability to use a firearm. Sufficient knowledge to prevent and/or resolve criminal offenses at the scene. Conducting preliminary investigations at a crime scene. Taking charge of a crime or accident scene. Interviewing witnesses of a crime or accident..

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Candidates tentatively selected for hire must successfully complete all pre-employment requirements prior to being made an official offer of employment IAW VA Handbook 0730. These requirements include a medical exam conducted by an Occupational Health Nurse, Psychological Assessment and testing of the applicant's emotional and mental stability by a psychiatrist or psychologist, hearing exam conducted by a Staff Audiologist and physical agility test to be conducted by a member of our Southern Arizona VA Health Care System Police Department. IAW VA Handbook 5005, all applicants being considered for appointment to a VA police officer will be vetted to the extent possible prior to entrance on duty. Interviews will be conducted with former employers and former supervisors to verify listed qualifying experience and work habits of the applicants to determine the quality of work history for all employment within the last five years.Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
