Assists sworn personnel in maintaining order and security in a Sheriff's Department custody detention, station jail, or court lockup facility. Incumbents allocable to this class function as paraprofessional support to sworn personnel and are distinguished by the need to exercise independent judgment and initiative while under the direct and/or functional supervision of designated sworn personnel. Incumbents who are initially assigned to a custody facility, other than a Type l jail, receive immediate supervision from sworn law enforcement personnel, assist sworn staff in observing inmates and in supervising recreational and work activities of inmates, and may be assigned to assist sworn supervisory staff in a main or dormitory control booth by monitoring inmate movement and controlling entry and exit to a facility, or in the classification process at a custody facility. Incumbents with a competent performance rating may be assigned to a Sheriff's Station or Custody Division Type l jail facility after one year, or to a court lockup facility after two years. Incumbents assigned to a court lockup, station, or Type l jail facility receive immediate supervision from theWatch Commander,Watch Sergeant, or designated supervisory authority. These incumbents have primary responsibility for facility intake and release processes, ensuring the maintenance of order and security in the detention area of a facility, and compliance with administrative regulations, judicial rulings, and the Sheriff's Department Manual of Policy and Procedures.
Essential Job Functions
Assists in supervising the conduct of inmates in sleeping quarters, during meals and bathing, at recreation, and on work assignments.
Assists in instructing and overseeing the work of a group of inmates assigned to various operational, maintenance, or other rehabilitative activities.
Assists in the operation of main or dormitory control booths.
Assists in processing inmates for court appearances.
Assists in performing administrative and operation duties such as scheduling, maintaining unit logs and records, preparing reports or memoranda, and other record keeping as directed.
Controls or assists incontrolling and monitoringaccessto attorney rooms and visiting areas.
Fingerprints, photographs, and/or operates live scan machines or assists in the process of fingerprinting and photographing inmates.
Issues visitor passes and facility employee identification cards.
Operates a computer terminal to obtain criminal history information including warrants or other holds, and updates classification or housing information as necessary.
Interviews inmates and reviews records relative to the classification process to determine appropriate security level, eligibility for transfer to other facilities, or status as returnees from other facilities.
Ensures compliance with Title 15 of the California Code of Regulations and/or other legislative or judicial compliance orders as necessary.
Distributes and account for facility keys, as needed.
Assigned to a Sheriff's Station or other Type l jail facility to assist in receiving and processing inmates (e.g., searching, booking, photographing, fingerprinting, maintaining inmate records) and performing additional duties in relation to booking procedures and compliance with administrative regulations and court decisions).
Secures inmates and their personal property and monies as necessary in compliance with departmentalpolicies and procedures including juvenile detentionpolicies and regulations.
Maintains gate book, station jail reference manual, and/or other booking paperwork.
Transmits fingerprint cards and/or operates Live Scan equipment as necessary.
Issues personal hygiene supplies and/or specifically approved medications as directed.
Orders, inspects, and serves food to inmates.
Maintains sanitary conditions within thecustody,jail, or court lockupfacility.
Responds to public inquiries regarding inmates.
Providesopportunities for inmates to contact the Bail Deviation Unit for possible bail reduction or release on the inmate's own recognizance.
Inspects the court lockup and floor detention areas prior to and after inmate/prisoner occupancy.
Scans inmate wristband identification upon entry to and exit from the lockup and other secured areas using the Defendant Inmate Movement Management System (DIMMS); processes booking remands and release of inmates and prisoners.
CollectsDNAfrom identified inmates or prisoners as legally mandated; secures results for furtherprocessing; enters information into the DNA Offender Tracking System (DOTS).
Operates miscellaneous equipment and/or motor vehicles as required.
18years of age at the time of filing.
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent high school proficiency or higher. Evidence of equivalent high school proficiency includes having successfully passed the GED, TASC, HiSET, or CHSPE.
To determine if a foreign diploma is equivalent to those of U.S. high schools, the foreign transcripts must be evaluated by one of the approved organizations listed on the State of California's Commission on Teacher Credentialing website, ****, or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, ****. These organizations are private enterprises that charge a fee for their services.
A valid California class C driver license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related functions.
Some positions in this classification, depending upon assignment, require possession of a valid California class C driver license to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a valid California classCdriver license, or higher, prior toselection.
Successful candidates for the positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. A candidate whose driving record shows three (3) or more moving violations within the last year will not be appointed.
IV - Arduous
Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
Candidates must be in good general physical condition and free from any medical conditions that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the essential duties of this position.
Although there are no minimum or maximum height requirements, the height-weight relationship of each candidate must either (1) fall within the ranges in the following table or (2) if the candidate's height is not included on the table, be found to be acceptable after individual evaluation. Height measurements areconducted without shoes. Weight measurements are conducted without shoes and coat. Candidates whose height falls between any of the measurements shown on the table must meet the requirements of the lower height. Individuals who do not meet the standard shall have their body fat measured. Female candidates whose body fat is 33% or less may be qualified. Male candidates whose body fat is 22% or less may be qualified.

The examination will consist of a paper-and-pencil or computer format test weighted 100%, assessing vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing clarity, spelling, grammar, deductive and inductive reasoning, and data interpretation. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher onthe written test in order to be placed on the eligible register. Candidates who fail the written test may retake the test once everysix (6) months. The written test is not reviewable by candidates per Civil Service Rule 7.19.

Applicants who have achieved a passing scorefrom the current Law Enforcement Job Family (LEJF) examinations will have their written test score automatically transferred to theLEJF positions for which they have applied. Please note, the written test score is valid for twenty-four (24) months.
Applications will be processed on an as received basis and candidates will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly. All names on the register are eligible for appointment. No person on the eligible register may compete for this examination more than once every twenty-four (24) months. Successful candidates will remain on the register for a period of twenty-four (24) monthsfollowing the date of eligibility, unless they: do not appear (DNA) to any scheduled appointment.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a zero tolerance
policy for its employees for the following:
use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
use of marijuana with or without a prescription.
Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
Candidates who have participated in the examination process for any one of the LEJFpositions listed in the Score Transfer section of this bulletin, and whodo not achieve a qualifying score, must waitsix (6) months after the date ofthe failed testto reapply for any of the LEJF examinations. Reapplying continuously will override the existinginformation andwill cause a delay in the processing of the most recent application. Only the most current application will be considered. Candidates in the hiring process who fail the SQ for any newly submitted application, will automatically be disqualified from all positions, for a minimum period of twelve (12) months.

Candidates will be given a Pre-Investigative Questionnaire that is to be completed and submitted on the day of their background intake appointment. Candidates will be asked questions regarding narcotics use, theft, arrest history, domestic violence, and driving history. Examples of disqualifying factors include but are not limited to: the failure to appear to scheduled appointments, felony convictions, job related misdemeanor convictions, certain serious traffic convictions or patterns, a suspended license, driving under the influence, poor credit or employment history, substance abuse, and active criminal probation.
Candidates will be required to complete a P.O.S.T. mandated Personal History Statement (PHS). Candidates will receive emails from the Department's electronic case management system, E-Hire, with instructions on how to complete and upload the PHS electronically. Candidates are required to submit specific documents(i.e., driver license, social security card, birth/marriage certificate(s) etc.). It is the candidates' responsibility to bring both original documents and copies to their background intake appointment. Department representatives will verify the copies against the originaldocuments, and return all original documents to the candidates.
Athorough background investigation is conducted which includes, but is not limited to: discrepancy interviews, a Live Scan (fingerprint search), polygraph examination, law enforcement agency checks, and residence/employment checks.Candidates who complete the background investigation processmay be selected for the position andwill be extended a conditionaloffer of employment prior tothe medicalor psychological evaluations. Candidates who are disqualified from the background investigation will be ineligible to reapply for all Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department positions for a period of twelve (12) months.
The medical evaluation assesses physical ability, ensuring capability to participate in the demanding duties of the position. Candidates who do not pass the medical evaluation will be in eligible to reapply for the position for a period of twelve (12) months.
The psychological evaluation consists of a four (4) hour test. Once candidates have completed the test they will be scheduled foran appointment with a psychologist. Candidates who do not pass the psychological evaluation will be ineligible to reapply for the position for a period of twelve (12) months.
Successful completion of the mandatory eight (8) week long Department sponsored, in-service training program, is required prior to final appointment. Positions allocated to this class must complete a training course given in accordance with Title 15 of the California Code of Regulations.
The resulting eligible register will be used to fill vacancies in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
